~ summary ~

‘ The Grand Prix in the Europe Film Festival ’
The 9 minute-film, set in the snowscape, which a young director from Singapore took, was chosen as the grand pix in the biggest short film festival in Europe. The main actor was Muragishi Hiroaki, who was a second year student at Hokkaido University at that time. Hiroaki also participated in the BGM for the film, having the ambition to become a musician. Unfortunately, he passed away last summer. He would be happy if he was alive, his mother, Reiko said. …..

‘Monkeylove,’ with a guy, Hiroaki, in a monkey suit searching for lost love, was taken by the director, Royston Tan (30). In the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, it has been evaluated that the short film implies a number of meanings lyrical, enigmatic, pensive, whimsical and concise like a haiku.

The promising director, Royston Tan was chosen as one of the top 20 heroes in the Time Magazine Asian Hero Award 2004. He made ‘Monkeylove’ when he was invited for the artist in residency program in Sapporo.

For Royston, who was born in a country where there is no snow, the white landscape gave him a feeling of beauty which he had never had. “I wanna take something here, using the 8mm film.”
Royston met Hiroaki (21) at the welcome party, and the director asked Hiroaki to take part in the film.

…. Hiroaki had various activities; he had played the guitar since high school and had worked on special art with the theme of a river. According to Mr Homma, staff in the S-Air, Royston said, “I see myself in the young Hiroaki when he was struggling with what he can do.”

…..’Monkeylove’ was completed in March, 2005. Hiroaki was satisfied with the work and showed it to his mother. However, last August he was swept away by the river when he visited Kochi to take part in the Yosakoi Festival and played in the river. He was 22.

Reiko, his mother wondered why his son acted in the film when she watched the DVD first. However, now it’s different. She finds the film a living proof of her son. Reiko calmly says, “Hiroaki has given me a present even though he has passed away.”
