---------------------------------------------------
Michael Jason Baers
「META COMICS」

Cecilia Ramirez-Corzo Robledo

Ingirafn Steinarsson

Julia Lohmann

A Hearten Discussion we have had this year !
Assessment review by Hisashi Shibata, Dirctor of NPO_S-AIR

In total, there were 45 applicants for the two terms; summer to autumn or early winter in 2007; There were 40 applicants for the artist residency in Sapporo as the regular offering program, and 5 applicants applied from 'stock 20' in Taiwan for the exchange program. It took a day to select 4 artists in all with 13 juries including commissioners of S-Air, staff of S-Air, and a guest such as the designer, Ryohei Kudo (wabi sabi)

Since artists tend to use a CD-ROM or DVD for their works these days, it takes more time to look at their works in their application form. The jury, who spent the longest time among others reading all 45 documentations, stayed for 8 hours in the meeting room.

Juries used to place emphasis on the higher quality of finished works or past results of artists when the S-Air started 7 or 8 years ago. On the other hand, in recent years, juries have tended to select an artist who is expected to develop during his or her stay and process of working in Sapporo, that is, an artist with potential who could bloom in Sapporo.

Even if the level of the artist's work looks high, when the artwork seem to have been completed, or when something beyond their current work would not be expected, juries tend to be unwilling to vote this type of artist. A vote may be one for an artist who would have unknown and uncountable possibilities.
Nevertheless, since S-Air was established we have still had the unchangeable preference for an artist. Our interest may be drawn to the artist's home-country from which we have never invited an artist. Since most of the juries, who are committee members of the S-Air, get involved in the artist's stay and work in Sapporo, they increase their interests in the new culture brought with the artist and they will have more sense of a challenge.

"It is not just the assessment that depends on the artist's work.
We select the artist to communicate with them."
This idea may be typical of the S-Air, because we think of art project as
"what people communicate via art."

* About the theme of this project
The theme this year is the "Exchange Program for Creative Hubs."
Places for the artist's exchange, introduced by the applicant, draw various characteristic interests. Some places may use characteristic managements or conditions that may not be found in Japan. The institution's activity for the artist's exchange would be introduced by the artist on the occasion of a lecture. This year's top story is the artist in exchange with the "stock20" in Taiwan. Last year, another Japanese artist was sent to Mexico via the artist exchange program. However, it is the first time that two institutions will exchange artists with each other. The final assessment for several artists recommended by the S-Air for the stock20 is going to be taken by the on-site staff in Taiwan. We are looking forward to seeing who will be chosen and how each artist chosen will exchange in each area.

First term : 2 artists

Michael Jason Baers
Originally from the U.S. Lives in Berlin. Male. Born in 1968

His characteristic artistic style, for instance, in his work, "META COMICS," is shown in the context of art with the method of Manga. The style was controversial in the assessment meeting, and the juries spoke at length about it.
It is interesting what would be created by his sense stimulated so many in the great nation of Manga, Japan.

Cecilia Ramirez-Corzo Robledo
Born and lives in Mexico
Female. Born in 1979

She has a varied background from architecture and art to film. It is interesting that she shows this experience in her work. Since the S-Air sent an artist, Ikuko Imamura, to Mexico with the exchange program made by her plan last year, we expect to have more of a relationship with Mexico, as well as a greater information exchange about creative hubs.

[[ the next artist for the first term behind the successful applicants ]]
Vicky Mendiz Casas
Lives in Spain, Female. Born in 1978

She makes sophisticated and high-quality finished photographic works. It is interesting that we have never before exchanged with Spain.

Second term : 2 artists

Lee Szuhui
Lives in Taiwan, Female. Born in 1980

She is one of the artists nominated for the exchange program project within Taiwan. In total, 5 female artists in their twenties were nominated. To be honest, the votes polarized. She was selected because it is unique that with each of her works the ornamental art based on black is shown in a flat space, three dimensional objects, or space. Juries also voted with their expectations of her possibilities.

Ingirafn Steinarsson
Originally from Sweden, lives in Reykjavik, Iceland. Male. Born in 1973

He creates various arts such as drawings, installations, and performances.
Most juries seem to have felt caught by his unique sense of art.
We have invited neither a Swedish artist nor an artist from Iceland. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain these new places for building a relationship and arts information exchange.

[[ the next artist for the second term behind the successful applicants ]]

Julia Lohmann
London, UK, born in Germany 1977
Female.

She has had various careers in her background, from design to art and her work shows a high-quality. The place for the creative hubs exchange is interesting because it is with the aim of "Slow Life."
